Butterfly Way Studio
art on purpose

*Now open by appointment*

Welcome to Butterfly Way Studio. Here you’ll find a brief respite from the outside world. A place to relax or rejuvenate for a few hours or an entire day. A space for quiet contemplation, creativity, and immersion in a natural setting.

The studio is part of ARTrail Muskoka, where artist/owner Christina MacBean creates her work and hosts workshops (click here for more about Christina's art). This inspirational, creative hideaway is available to you, too.

A short, three-minute walk into the woods you’ll find this charming studio, a multi-purpose space serving as a creative living room, a place to play a board game on a rainy day, or for artists who need a private, immersive experience to focus on a new body of work. Need a quiet and comfy place to write in your journal or draw in your sketchbook? Read a book or just stare out the window into acres of surrounding bush, daydreaming? Butterfly Way Studio is the place for you.

In this brightly lit studio you’ll find a sweet bunkie-sized woodstove to keep you warm and cozy, a table and chairs, an easel, and even a Praga Etching Press*. The outhouse is just a short stroll away — we're told it's the prettiest outhouse in Muskoka! The firepit has a grill if you want to cook your lunch over a fire or simply enjoy the warmth of the flames if you'd rather be outside. As our guest, you are also free to walk the trails and explore the property.

Guests who are staying with us will have exclusive access to the studio space during their stay. Otherwise, the studio is available to rent for the day or as part of an overnight experience. (Details about Butterfly Way Respite can be found here)

Day Rental is available Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Our introductory rate is only $60/day. All fees collected help cover studio-related expenses and expand our ability to support those in need.

Please bring slippers or indoor shoes and, even though there's a wood stove, a comfy sweater, and a toque help on colder days. Bring your lunch, your journal, a book to read, or a sketchbook. Water and a kettle for tea/coffee are provided.

Artists, please bring your supplies — canvas, paper, paint, ink, gloves, brushes, etc. Limited printing tools are available — a few small rollers (the largest is 6"), putty knives, a wash basin for soaking paper, cleaning rags, vegetable oil, and newspaper for cleaning. We aim to be a solvent-free studio but recognize it can't be avoided with some mediums. If you use solvent for cleaning, please take your tools home to clean.

*To use the press, guests must be experienced printers. ALL guests must participate in a brief safety refresher before entering the studio. Those who are new to printing can sign up for an introductory workshop and printing assistance for an additional fee (see below).
