Christina MacBean - Artist Statement

When looking for abstract compositions to print or paint, I ask myself what is essential? What imagery is vital to this process? How little information can I include while still evoking an emotional response? It is a controlled process, however, I intentionally leave room for the materials to speak for themselves, creating opportunities for discovery.

Although my prints tend to be representational, the simplicity of the imagery and the printing process used (woodblock, intaglio, litho, etc.) inspires and invites the viewer to explore deeper possibilities. I intentionally challenge perceptions, whether in the image itself or in the concept in order to draw the viewer into another realm of seeing, oftentimes by completing work that is deliberately incomplete. Through my techniques, intuition, and the subject matter that inspires me, I am able to produce sensitive yet vibrant imagery with bold compositions.
